Canadian composer Howard Shore brought Peter Jackson's trilogy to its conclusion with a score that's as vast as the film itself, combining symphonic sweep with intimate motifs. Performed by the London Philharmonic alongside massed choirs and soloists, it's the most expansive of the three soundtracks, swelling to moments of overwhelming grandeur before retreating into quiet, lyrical passages. 'Minas Tirith' and 'The Ride of the Rohirrim' thunder with brass and martial percussion, while 'Twilight and Shadow', sung by Renee Fleming, provides aching contrast. The climactic 'The End of All Things' and 'The Grey Havens' carry a deep sense of finality, resolving decades of musical themes. Annie Lennox's 'Into the West' closes on a note of elegy, perfectly judged.
